Meesho Seller Fees Explained (2026): Is 0% Commission Really Free?

"Meesho has 0% commission" is true. "Selling on Meesho is free" is not. Every week I get messages from sellers confused about why their settlement amount is smaller than expected. This article breaks down exactly where the money goes.

The three real costs on Meesho

1. Shipping charges (the big one)

Meesho doesn't charge commission, but you pay for shipping on every order. The charge depends on product weight and delivery zone (local / regional / national). For a typical sub-500g fashion product, expect an average of around ₹65 per order - lighter products in local zones cost less, heavier products shipped across the country cost more.

This is the fee most new sellers forget when pricing. On a ₹300 product, ₹65 shipping is already 21% of your selling price - higher than Amazon's commission on many categories.

2. GST on fees

GST at 18% applies on the fees Meesho charges you (like shipping). So a ₹65 shipping charge actually deducts about ₹77 from your settlement. Small per order, meaningful at volume: across 500 orders that GST line is roughly ₹6,000.

3. Returns - the silent profit killer

When a customer returns an order (RTO or customer return), you typically don't earn anything on that order, and depending on the return type you bear costs - return shipping on customer returns, and the product sometimes comes back damaged or unsellable.

In fashion categories, return rates of 15-30% are normal. If you priced your product with zero return buffer, a 25% return month converts your "profit" into a loss.

The real settlement maths - worked example

Say you sell a kurti for ₹350 that costs you ₹180:

LineAmount
Selling price₹350
Shipping charge−₹65
GST (18% on fees)−₹12
Settlement credited₹273
Product cost−₹180
Packaging−₹10
Profit per delivered order₹83

Looks fine. Now apply a 20% return rate across 10 orders:

  • 8 delivered orders × ₹83 profit = +₹664
  • 2 returned orders ≈ product cost locked + handling losses ≈ −₹100 to −₹200 depending on condition and return type

Real monthly profit is meaningfully lower than the per-order number suggests. This is why the return buffer belongs inside your selling price, not in your hopes.

How Meesho still beats Amazon and Flipkart for many products

Despite all of the above, Meesho's structure is genuinely the most beginner-friendly:

CostMeeshoFlipkartAmazon
Commission0%~8% avg~9% avg
Fixed/closing fee-~₹15~₹10
Shipping (avg)~₹65~₹45~₹50
Payment cycle7 days7 days14 days

On a ₹300-₹400 product, Meesho usually nets you more per order than Flipkart or Amazon - because percentage commissions hurt more as price rises, while Meesho's flat shipping hurts less. Above roughly ₹600-₹800, the comparison gets closer and depends on your category.

Don't take my word for it - run your exact product through the platform comparison tool and see all three settlements side by side.

Pricing rules that protect you

  1. Never price below: cost + packaging + ₹77 (shipping+GST) + 15% return buffer. That's your floor, before any profit.
  2. Recalculate when you change weight. A heavier packaging choice can move you into a higher shipping slab.
  3. Check your settlement reports monthly. The Supplier Panel shows exact deductions per order - verify them against your assumptions.
  4. Raise prices before cutting quality. A ₹20 price increase is invisible to buyers; a cheap product that gets returned is not.

FAQ

Does Meesho charge a registration or listing fee? No. Registration is free and there are no listing fees or monthly charges - you can even start without a GST number in many categories. Your only costs are per-order (shipping, GST on fees) and returns.

Why is my settlement less than my selling price? Shipping charges and GST on those charges are deducted before settlement. Check the order-level payment breakdown in your Supplier Panel - every rupee is itemised there.

Can I reduce my shipping charges? Partly. Lighter, smaller packaging can keep you in a lower weight slab. You can't choose the courier or negotiate rates as a small seller.

Is Meesho's 0% commission permanent? It has held across most categories for years, but marketplaces change policies. Always verify current rates at supplier.meesho.com - and re-run your pricing when anything changes.
